Dozens dead in Chinese train crash

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Two passenger trains collided in eastern China's Shandong province Monday morning, killing at least 70 and injuring 420, according to China's official news agency.

Two trains collided in east China's Shandong province on Monday.

One train on its way from Beijing to Qingdao, a city in eastern China, derailed and crashed into a train which was traveling from the Shandong city of Yantai to Xuzhou in the eastern Jiangsu Province, according to a report by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The wreck happened in the city of Zibo in Shandong Province at 4:43 a.m., the report said.

"Most passengers were still asleep, but some were standing in the aisle waiting to get off at the Zibo Railway Station," a passenger named Zhang was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

"I suddenly felt the train, like a roller coaster, toppled 90 degrees to one side and all the way to the other side. When it finally went off the tracks, many people fell on me and hot water poured out of the thermos flasks."

Local villagers joined police officers and medical workers in the rescue effort, breaking train windows with farm tools to pull out stranded passengers, Xinhua said. Survivors also joined in, using blankets from sleeper cars as stretchers to lift the seriously injured from the stricken carriages.

A 38-year-old woman called Yu told Xinhua she had escaped through a crack in the floor of the carriage with her 13-year-old daughter.

"We were still sleeping when the accident occurred," she said. "I suddenly woke up when I felt the train stopped with a jolt. In a minute or two it started again, but soon toppled."

Xinhua quoted government officials saying they suspect human error in the mishap and have ruled out terrorism as a cause.

CCTV, China's state television station, said four French citizens were among the injured.

BEIJING — A predawn collision between two passenger trains in Eastern China on Monday has killed at least 66 people and injured 247, according to Xinhua, the state news agency, making it one of the deadliest rail accidents in recent years.

Rescuers work at the site where two trains collided in east China's Shandong province.

Two passenger trains collided in eastern China on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported, and a hospital official said injured passengers had been admitted.
The two trains, one heading from Beijing to Qingdao and the other traveling between Yantai and Xuzhou, collided at 4:40 a.m. in the town of Zibo, Shandong Province.

Witnesses said one train derailed at a bend and then struck the other, throwing at least ten cars into a ditch. Wire reports quoted a rail official saying that a new timetable introduced on Monday might have contributed to the crash.

Last September, a collision involving two trains took place on the same line, although there were no deaths. In January, 18 track workers were killed on the Beijing-Qingdao route after they were struck by a train traveling 75 m.p.h. in the dark.

Chinese newspapers frequently report railway fatalities, although most of them involve small numbers of deaths from collisions between trains and vehicles at track crossings.

China has one of the world’s most heavily used rail systems. In recent years, at least $100 billion has been spent on improvements and expanded service.

Reached by phone on Monday morning, hospital officials in Zibo said the injured began arriving around 5 a.m. with about 100 ambulances ferrying the injured to local hospitals.

A medical worker at the People Liberation Army’s No. 148 Hospital said more than 82 of the injured had been brought to the hospital and that family members had begun arriving by late morning.

An emergency room worker at Zibo Central Hospital said 40 patients were being treated there.

“Now the situation of patients is stable,” she said. “Some have lower back fractures, some have fractures to the chest and some have broken legs.”
